What is a FibroScan?
A FibroScan is a liver examination procedure similar to an ultrasound, utilizing cutting-edge transient elastography technology. This non-invasive method uses controlled vibrations to assess your liver’s health. The entire test typically lasts about 10 minutes, and you receive same-day results.
Who would benefit from a FibroScan?
Individuals with at least one of the following risk factors face an increased likelihood of developing fatty liver disease. Fatty liver most often does not present symptoms, highlighting the importance of risk factors in guiding screening decisions:
- Obese or Overweight
- Diabetic or Pre-diabetic
- Has Metabolic Syndrome
- Age > 50
- Has High Cholesterol
- Has Hypertension
- Of Hispanic ethnicity
- Previously or Recently Diagnosed with Fatty Liver
Why is Fibroscan® done?
If other tests suggest potential issues with liver function, your doctor might suggest a fibroscan to gain a more precise understanding of your liver’s condition. Unlike a liver biopsy, this procedure is fast, painless, and can be conveniently performed in a clinic setting.
- Determine how much fat is stored in the liver; and
- Determine the degree of fibrosis and/or cirrhosis (scarring).
How do you prepare for a Fibroscan®?
Before undergoing a Fibroscan, you must refrain from eating or drinking anything for three hours before the test. Additionally, individuals with any of the following conditions may not be eligible for a Fibroscan exam:
- an implanted electrical device, such as a pacemaker or defibrillator, or
- patients with insulin pumps may have a fibroscan as long as the electronic part is removed before the exam
- if you are pregnant.
How is Fibroscan® performed?
The Fibroscan is a procedure where you lie on your back with your right arm raised behind your head. A certified technician will then apply a water-based gel to the skin on the right side of your body, specifically at the rib cage, followed by gently placing a probe. Rest assured, this process is not painful. The exam involves taking ten consecutive measurements at the same location.
What happens after Fibroscan® is done?
Following the exam, you are free to resume your regular eating, drinking, and daily activities immediately. There is no downtime or recovery period required after a fibroscan. The fibroscan report will be interpreted by a study investigator or physician, who will go over the results with you. Additionally, they will offer personalized lifestyle modifications and recommendations, which you can take with you for follow-up discussions with your primary care physician (PCP).
